At Elite Training Services Ltd, we’re committed to ensuring your team works safely, confidently, and efficiently in confined spaces. Our training goes far beyond “tick‑the‑box” compliance. We deliver hands‑on, practical instruction that prepares workers for real‑world conditions—because skills like gas detection can’t be learned by clicking through an online module.
Our confined space training is purpose-built to raise safety standards and boost on-site productivity. As New Zealand specialists, we combine rigorous theory with hands-on practice so your team masters both the equipment and its limits—knowledge that builds confidence in tools and procedures when it matters most.
Delivered by current industry professionals, our courses share real-world methods that improve safety behaviours and operational efficiency. Training is interactive and practical: participants handle gear, run scenarios and problem-solve together, embedding skills and ensuring retention.
When your team completes Elite Training Services confined space course, they leave competent, confident and ready to perform safely. The result is clearer compliance, fewer incidents and a tangible lift in work rate. We supply and use the equipment we teach with, so what we train is what you’ll rely on in the field.
Make your workforce safer and more productive—invest in training that delivers measurable results.
Our prices include applying the NZQA unit standards to the learners Record of Learning.
Course Details
Basic Confined Space Course:
This is our one-day course. It covers Unit Standard 18426 – Demonstrate Knowledge of Hazards Associated with Confined Spaces.
Unit Standard 25510 – Operate a Gas Testing Device to Determine a Suitable Atmosphere Exists to Work Safely can be added. Note: Trainees are advised that it makes for a very full day. The cost is $310 + GST (including NZQA credits).
Full Confined Spaces & Gas Testing Course:
Two full days (extra days may be needed if you require Breathing Apparatus, Permit-to-Work, or additional site-specific rescue training). The course is specifically written to include the contents of the below NZQA Unit Standards:
18426 – Demonstrate Knowledge of Hazards Associated with Confined Spaces
25510 – Operate a Gas Testing Device to Determine a Suitable Atmosphere Exists to Work Safely
17599 – Plan a Confined Space Entry
Our courses for Working in Confined Spaces cover the worker and PCBU requirements under the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 and its associated regulations (2016); AS2865:2009 -Safe Work in Confined Spaces; and how these all fit together. An overview of the course would be the following:
Methods of entry and exit into confined spaces.
Confined space restrictions and their effect on patient recovery in an incident.
Types of gases found in common confined spaces (for example, sewers, tanks, silos, pits, process vessels, etc.)
Hazards associated with gas testing over gas monitoring.
Duties of safety personnel and the risks associated with these tasks.
Isolation of confined space hazards (lockout methods)
minimisation controls / use of PPE (and if required, Breathing Apparatus).
The courses also cover a wide range of equipment associated with confined space work and its appropriate use and maintenance.
The need for a rescue plan when working in confined spaces and their basic requirements.
Suspension trauma / intolerance, and the effect this may have on your rescue plan.
Develop a safe Confined Space Permit for the specified task.
Benefits of gas monitoring or gas testing associated with the specified task.
Type of gas detector required, and if only testing, the frequency of testing to be implemented.
Practical Component
The one-day Confined Space Hazards course only has a short practical component covering equipment available to workers, and the benefits and pitfalls of different gas testing devices.
The two-day course has a more thorough practical component where trainees complete several confined space entries.
The practical component covers visually checking the confined space (externally) to ensure that the trainee’s plan is practical for the task at hand. The trainee will then:
Talk through and apply any isolations -as required in the permit documentation
Check for safety and suitability of a confined space harness.
Fit and adjust the harness.
Set up a suitable form of entry and exit method to be used for confined space.
Gas-test the environment.
Work through the benefits of Gas Monitoring or Gas Testing in this specific scenario, and frequency of recording tests.
Safely enter and exit the confined space (signing in and out each time).
Recording gas test results throughout the confined space entry.
Pack up and refurbish equipment, removing isolations etc, as per the permit documentation
Rescue simulations and scenarios are run. These show various suitable methods to conduct a rescue from the confined space.
Please touch-base with us about your confined space training needs and certification, if there are specific points you or your company want covered in the training package.
